The last two times I sat down to make an entry here, the webpage sat open so long that it expired. So we'll skip over the last few weeks' adventures of caving, Dresden, my parents' visit from Oregon, Salzburg, and Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and cut to the issue at hand: we are moving. Out of the apartment by this weekend, out of the country by July 11.
There are so many facets to this move: leaving Germany for America, leaving the Army for civilian life, becoming jobless, homeless, and most difficult of all: gear wrangling.
We own enough gear to outfit a militia crossing the Alps, so deciding what pieces need to be where, and when, makes me want to sit down and write my blog instead. The problem is that you need different items for camping, backpacking, and glacier travel, but some things you need for all three. In addition, the trips we are planning for the next month involve staying at huts (not quite backpacking) and a type of mountain climbing called "via ferrata" (not quite rock climbing). So what with all the grey areas and nowhere to call home besides our rented Kia Rio, its a good thing I married a Ranger who rides out logistical problems and physical challenges like those guys in Apollo 13.
I will miss life in Amberg very very much. Hopefully our next month in the Alps will sooth the sadness, and those marvelous days of sunshine and walking over rock will have the chance to be shared right here.
Until then, tschuss!
